Copper Patina Finish Blends Modern Architecture with Nature

A stunning patinated copper door from our Inspiration Door Range was specified to enhance the striking aesthetic of this new-build home, characterised by a distinctive slate façade which blends modern architectural elements with natural charm.

The brief

The brief was to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the home’s exterior through the installation of a unique and eye-catching door that not only complements the external finish but also serves as a statement piece.

The client’s objective was to create a customer door that was:

Statement door design with Copper Patina

The client wanted a door that was a ‘statement piece’ but didn’t overwhelm the exterior. Collaborating closely with the homeowner, the Copper Patina range was selected to complement the slate façade of the property and harmonise with the seaside views, evoking the natural transition from sand to sea.

Patinated copper is rarely used on doors, especially as a primary material. Typically seen in architectural accents or roofing, using it on a door created a unique, eye-catching feature.

This is achieved using a specially developed, hand-lacquering patina process, variables in air moisture and other atmospheric compounds cause the metal to change colour and develop a unique patterned layer, that also delivers advanced weather performance and sealing.

The process occurs entirely naturally, through the gradual interaction of metal surfaces with the environment over time.

Artisan craftsmanship for a one-of-a-kind result

“The patina process has created an effect that resembles the ocean rolling onto the beach which is just perfect for the stunning seaside location of this property,” says Bruce Dudman, Inspiration Doors Production Director.

“The patina finish uses the natural aging process of materials like copper or bronze and oxidation, plus exposure to the elements, creating striking colour changes and a unique, weathered aesthetic.

“It involves hands-on craftsmanship, and results in a one-off piece that cannot be replicated, setting it apart as a custom architectural element of the property.”

Overcoming design challenges

The project involved several unique challenges and design elements, combining unusual materials, careful environmental consideration, and artisan craftsmanship to create a door that was both a functional entryway and an artistic statement.

Integration with the slate façade was a key element of the project and achieving a design that was bold enough to stand out while still blending with the natural materials of the house was a fine balance.

“Slate has a distinct natural texture and colour, so designing a door that both complemented and enhanced this rugged, modern facade was challenging”, Bruce continues.

“The Copper Patina effect chosen for the door had to harmonise with the slate, creating a visually seamless look without competing for attention. This required careful colour matching and attention to the balance of materials.”

Building for environmental resilience with custom materials:

Inspiration Doors are crafted using Tricoya, an exceptionally durable modified timber combined with steel reinforcement and dense insulation to create a stable, sturdy and secure foundation. The door needed to withstand the local climate, which involved customising the patina finish to resist wear, while maintaining its aesthetic appeal. Every element was selected to provide both longevity and beauty, making it a durable piece of functional art suited to its environment.

‘A piece of art’

Completed within budget and ahead of the specified timeframe, the client says the door has “truly made the desired impact”, not only creating a statement entrance to the property, but also “a piece of art, admired by those who pass by.”

Bruce concludes:

“Our unique range of artisan front doors are inspired by the natural beauty of Cornwall, drawing inspiration from its rugged coastline and the ocean beyond, to the softer hues of its moors and rolling farmland. This project embodies that spirit perfectly and demonstrates our skill in rising to numerous design challenges. The result is a luxurious and striking yet sturdy entrance that stands as a functional art installation in its own right.”
